Public schools are rising up to address the increasing concern about bullying in schools and it goes to the top level. October was recognized as National Anti-Bullying month. CNN even did an extensive report on the subject. So the question then stands: what is the church doing about it? What should we be doing about it? This workshop will present different scenarios as a catalyst for discussion, offer Sunday school lesson resources, and challenge you to take a stand.

Cassie is the Guest Service Coordinator at Prescott Pines Camp where meeting people's needs is her ministry. She has a huge passion for working with kids and seeing their desire for Christ grow.

Karen Arnold is married and has six children.  She has lived in Tucson since 2003.  While living here she has had the privilege to direct five Vacation Bible Schools, created a Christian Day Camp, lead before school chapel, as well as ministering on Sunday mornings.  Karen believes it is a great honor to be used by God to minister to children.

Think Flannelgraphs are old school? Think again! This workshop will show you how exciting flannelgraphs can be and is geared towards novices and teachers with limited experience. You will receive plenty of teacher-focused tips for using flannelgraphs to teach Bible stories and truths.

Fritzi Griffis began teaching Sunday school and Awana 15 years ago and has been teaching children ever since. She has used flannelgraphs to teach 3-year olds through 2nd grade students.

Caring for Children with Special Needs – General

In Psalm 139:14 David wrote, "I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made . . ." All of God's children were made uniquely by their Creator. It's our job as teachers to build relationship with all of the children placed in our care and to model God's love for them. In this workshop we will discuss some of the "different abilities" of children with special needs, attitudes often held by teachers and classmates, and different ways to meet the needs of these special children and their families.

Creative Cooking with Preschoolers - Preschool

The Bible is full of food … from the fishes and loaves of bread to manna and quail.  Children love to cook and eat what they’ve created.  Come and learn ways to add simple recipes to your Sunday School or Preschool lessons.

Linda is married to Mick, and they have both children and grandchildren!  Linda teaches 2 year olds at Family Life Academy Preschool (Christ Community) and 4 year olds in Sunday School at El Camino Baptist Church.  She is a great cook, and knows just how to simplify the recipes for little hands.

Using simple drama techniques with Preschool and elementary aged children allows them to experience Bible stories in a very tangible way. To watch a child grieve and not know what to do is a profoundly difficult experience. The loss might be caused by the death of a relative, a divorce in the family, death of a pet or related to a move to a new neighborhood or school. This workshop will provide guidelines to help adults assist children in developing a lifelong, healthy response to loss. Bobbie Rill is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Grief Recovery Specialist. She has served as Executive Director over a multi-state network of counseling centers and the Director of Family Life Communication's national ministry to women, Women of Virtue. Since 9/11, Bobbie has focused her attention on how people have been socialized in our country to cope with loss and has a passion to help them discover effective ways to deal with their grief.

Cynthia Dusek is a homeschooling mom of four with almost 20 years of experience working with kids in various capacities. She especially loves teaching and playing with preschoolers. Cynthia currently serves as preschool director and leads preschool worship at Vail Christian Church.

In this workshop we will model a class designed for elementary children and their parents that teaches Biblical concepts and helps them answers questions about becoming a follower of Jesus Christ. The class is interactive, demonstrative and informative. This model not only educates students, it aids the parents in determining if their child is ready to make a decision to follow Christ.

With a degree in Christian Education, Donna has served in children’s ministry many years and in various capacities. She presently teaches the Baptism class at Pantano Christian Church. Her favorite group of children to teach are her two grandchildren. She also conducts training events internationally with women of oral cultures.

She and her husband Noel have been living in Tucson for six years, and they are currently elementary directors at Vail Christian Church. Ministering to Children and Families with Special Needs – General

According to pastors.com, one obstacle families with special needs children often face is a lack of acceptance in churches. About 90 percent of special needs families are unchurched. In this session we will discuss some common special needs affecting our children today and create an action plan for the classroom. Many of these special needs can seem hidden, but recognizing possible learning disabilities and special needs can help teachers create a classroom of acceptance for all kids.

Pam Freeman is a Children’s Pastor at Desert Son Community Church. She is also the busy mother of five. As the adopted mother of a son with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and a daughter with a limb difference, Pam has witnessed first-hand the challenges of attending church with children with special needs. Ensuring the church is a place of love and acceptance for all children is her passion.

According to UNICEF, there are well over 100 million orphans in the world. There are approximately 500,000 children in the United States foster care system. As Christians, we are a people called to defend the fatherless… to care for the child that has no family…to visit orphans in their distress.  What can we do as a church to minister to these children? How do we reach out and support these families?

Pam Freeman is the Children’s Pastor at Desert Son Community Church.  Pam has personally experienced the amazing blessing of adoption as a mother of three internationally adopted children. She is also blessed to serve many foster and adopted families at her church.  Since her first trip to a Russian orphanage, Pam has felt called to share her story and speak for those who often do not get a voice.

From safety to interacting with babies, we’ll discuss and brainstorm ways to partner with parents to help them feel comfortable leaving their babies with us. We’ll share ideas to help every nursery worker connect with parents, and ideas to help parents feel connected. This workshop is designed for newer volunteers.

Cheryl is a police department dispatcher supervisor by day and a mom and grandma all the rest of the time. She has served in the nursery and preschool departments at El Camino Baptist church for years, and works in Awana as well. She has a knack for making parents feel comfortable leaving their little ones in her care.
